Elite Field Does Not Disappoint At UC Irvine Invitational Presented By Kia

Santa Ana, Calif. – The University of Washington was the only team to shoot under par Monday as the Huskies lead the UC Irvine Invitational presented by Kia after the first day at the Santa Ana Country Club.

The fourth-ranked Huskies fired two rounds of 283 and lead the 13-team field with a 10-under par 566. All five Washington players are in the top 12 individually, led by Jennifer Yang who sits in fourth place after the first two rounds with a score of 141 (69-72). Ying Luo (69-73) and Cyd Okino (73-69) are tied for sixth at 142, Charlotte Thomas is 10 (73-70-143) and Eimi Koga is 12th (72-72-144).

Second-ranked USC recorded a one over-par 577 (287-290) and is in second place, 11-strokes behind Washington.  No. 15 Texas A&M is third (578), No. 51 Texas Tech is fourth (582) and No. 24 San Diego State (585) rounds out the top 5.

USC's Gabriella Then leads the field after shooting a six-under par 138 (70-68). Then is two strokes in front of Texas A&M's Marijosse Navarro (72-68) and Texas Tech's Kimmy Hill (68-72) heading in to the final round. Texas Tech's Stephanie Bertelsen also recorded a tournament-low 68 on the first round.

Host UC Irvine is 12th with a 36-hole score of 611 (308-303) and is led by sophomore Kaley In who is in 15th place after carding a 145 (73-72). Freshman Camille Wagg is tied for 38th at 151 (75-76), junior Kristin Henno is tied for 58 with a 156 total (79-77), while sophomore Samantha Chan is 68th (84-78-162) and Kelsey Kawaguchi is 69th (81-82-163).  UCI individuals are playing well with freshman Breanne Jones shooting a 149, including a collegiate best 72 on the second round. Freshman Joo Seo is tied for 58th at 156 (80-76).

The final round begins tomorrow with tee times starting at 7:45 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. At stake for the medalist is a sponsor's exemption to the Kia Classic held March 23-29 at the Aviara Golf Club.
