LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Anteaters and Bruins slugged it out on Pac-12 Network Friday afternoon with No. 2 UCLA claiming the 8-5 victory at Spieker Aquatics Center.
The Bruins (10-1) put up a stout defensive effort in the first half shutting out the 'Eaters (5-4) to take a 4-0 lead. Jillian Yocum stopped the Bruin momentum with a big save on a penalty shot from Emily Donohoe near the end of the first half.
UC Irvine fell behind 5-0 before turning on the offensive jets. Hanna Lancaster started it off with her first of two goals on the match which lead the squad. The 'Eaters closed the gap to 5-2 entering the fourth period after withstanding a barrage that Mary Brooks field blocked.
She added a goal of her own to make it 7-4, and an odd-man-advantage late gave UCI life, but Julie Swieca's pass was intercepted thwarting the comeback.
Swieca and Destene Albers accounted for the other Anteater goals. Rachel Fattal scored four times for the Bruins.
Gabby Pierandozzi assisted on two goals while Brooks, Emily Carlson, and Corinna Toledo pitched in. McKenna Mitchell stepped up at two-meter earning seven exclusions on the night.
Jillian Yocum stopped 10 shots while Sami Hill saved 11 for the Bruins.
The Anteaters now prepare for their UC Irvine Invitational next weekend, a two-day affair February 21-22 between Anteater Aquatics Complex and Corona del Mar HS. The 'Eaters begin at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday against No. 15 Michigan.
