Impressive Opening to 2015 Indoor Season for UC Irvine

 

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. --- Freshman Persis William-Mensah began her collegiate career in style, setting the UC Irvine indoor record in the 60 meters at the Lumberjack Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday.

William-Mensah posted a time of 7.59 seconds, which converts to 7.63 at altitude, breaking the previous UCI record of 7.69 set by Vanessa Houston in 2010.

William-Mensah finished third of 22 competitors in the event at Northern Arizona's Skydome and freshman Taisyn Crutchfield placed ninth in 7.85.

Ariel Cheng tied her No. 3 mark in Anteater history in the pole vault with a height of 12-0 to place third.

William-Mensah also competed in the 200 meters, finishing sixth in 25.68 while Crutchfield was 10th in 26.14.

Junior Kaulyn Lee-McNeill placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.96 and junior Lauren Hall was ninth in 2:25.63.

In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Paige Bushnell was fifth in 8.98 and Tyra Jones sixth in 9.24.

Senior Lily Trinh finished sixth in the 400 meters in 59.65 and Tatiana Martinez was 10th in 62.29.

Marthie Ponty placed eighth in the mile in 5:51.81, Courtney Sharar was ninth (5:57.45) and Pearl Law 10th (5:57.94).

UCI's 4x400 relay of Lee-McNeill, Jones, Trinh and Bushnell finished third with a time of 4:05.08.

In field events, Madelyn Sando placed fourth in the high jump (5-1), Lauren Ellison was fifth in the triple jump (34-11 ¾) and Dazhana Bauer-Jackson finished 10th in the weight throw (36-10 ¼).

In the multiple dual-meet scoring format, UCI went 2-3 with victories over Cal State Bakersfield and Southern Utah. 

The Anteaters travel to Seattle next weekend for the Washington Invitational Friday and Saturday.
