IRVINE, Calif. --- Junior Itos Aikhionbare smashed the UC Irvine record in winning the shot put Saturday in the 20th annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational at Anteater Stadium.
Aikhionbare earned her second school record with a mark of 53-9, almost two feet past the previous UCI record of 51-9 ¾ set by Alisha Misiaita in 2009. It was the second straight day for a school record as sophomore Bridget Devaney set a new mark in the hammer throw Friday at 168-0.
Aikhionbare also owns the school record in the discus throw (169-5) that she set last year. She placed second in the discus Saturday with a mark of 160-0.
Sophomore Kaulyn Lee-McNeill finished second of 26 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 60.78 and junior teammate Paige Bushnell was fifth in 61.76.
Freshman Megan George placed sixth of 42 in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.77, tying her No. 3 time in the UCI record book.
Junior Chelsea Schneider finished sixth of 56 runners in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:34.57.
Freshman Rebecka Miranda was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 38-2 ¼ for the ninth-best in Anteater history.
UCI's 4x400 relay of Saniya Syed, George, Lee-McNeill and Bushnell placed third with a season-best time of 3:45.67.
Sophomore Melanie Speech competes in the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships Friday and Saturday in Davis.
UCI may have competitors at the Oxy Invitational next Saturday (May 10).
The Big West Track & Field Championships are the following weekend (May 16-17), also in Davis.
