LONG BEACH, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to hold onto to a one-run lead and was swept by Long Beach State, 2-1 Saturday at Blair Field to end the regular season at 35-22 and 15-9 in the Big West.
UCI led most of the way after Jonathan Munoz hit a 1-1 pitch to the 5-6 hole that glanced off the glove of Michael Hill for a two-out, infield single that would allow Grant Palmer to score in the Anteater third.
Evan Brock blanked the Dirtbags for seven innings, holding Long Beach State to four hits. However, Brock, who threw 106 pitches, surrendered back-to-back hits in the eighth to put runners on second and third. He was then asked to issue an intentional walk to Patron before handing the ball to Mitch Merten, whose first offering to Richard Prigatano went for a two-run double that gave Long Beach State the one-run edge. UCI went to Evan Manarino, who struck out Hill and induced a grounder to third to get UCI out of the inning trailing by one.
Adam Alcantara, who was 3 for 4, hit a clean single in the ninth but with Kris Paulino at the plate, a failed hit-and-run resulted in a rundown for the first out. Ty Provencher struck out Paulino and pinch-hitter Evan Cassolato to end the game.
In what was a close game, the Anteater outfielders delivered in the bottom of the sixth as Justin Castro made a full-sprint, basket catch at the wall to rob Patron of the extra bases. Alcantara also came up with a big play by making a sliding, rolling catch on a sinking line drive by Michael Hill to get UCI back into the dugout.
UCI's best rally came in the sixth. McClanahan singled to lead off the inning but was caught stealing. With two outs, Chris Rabago and Alcantara came up with consecutive singles but Nick Sabo ended the inning with a strikeout
Brock fell to 8-5 after giving up two runs on seven hits.
Nick Rosetta earned the win after 1.2 hitless innings of relief and Prigatano led the team with two RBI.
