QUICK HITS
- The Anteaters play their final home games of the regular season this week.
- All three games against Cal State Fullerton will be televised. Friday's game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with the Saturday and Sunday contests on Prime Ticket.
- Due to the Prime Ticket broadcast, Saturday's game time has been moved from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- UC Irvine went 2-2 last week, suffering its first Big West series loss last weekend against fifth-ranked Cal Poly.
- The team is second in the conference in overall wins with 34 and first in percentage in league wins at .833 (15-3).
- Following Friday's game against the Titans, UCI Athletics will have its annual Fireworks Extravaganza.
- UCI Baseball will honor its seniors, Justin Castro, Evan Brock, Jimmy Litchfield, Mitch Merten and Andrew Morales Sunday prior to first pitch.
MOORE NAMED TO GREGG OLSON AWARD WATCH LIST
- Sam Moore was voted to the Gregg Olson Award watch list and is one of 80 baseball players in contention for the honor.
- The Gregg Olson Award honors the "Breakout Player of the Year" and is named for the former Auburn Pitcher, who became one of the top collegiate players in the nation after an initial season filled with only mixed success.
- Moore saw limited action for the Anteaters in his first two years, coming out of the bullpen in 16 appearances and logging a combined 14.2 innings.
- This year as the team's closer, Moore has risen to the national stage and currently leads the country with 23 saves.
- He is one save shy of tying the NCAA record with seven regular-season games remaining.
- He has already surpassed the UC Irvine single-season mark of 17 and erased the 19-year old Big West Conference record (20).
MANARINO VERSUS DYER, THE SEQUEL
- Evan Manarino will take the mound against the Bruins for the second time this season and will be opposed by right-hander Grant Dyer
- The lefty picked up a win against San Diego last Tuesday, holding the Toreros to two runs on eight hits in five innings of work while fanning three.
- Manarino then entered in relief against Cal Poly and tossed a inning of one-hit relief.
- The junior is 3-3 with a 2.93 ERA and has struck out 38 in 46 innings while walking just four.
- Since his March 18 start against Pepperdine, Manarino has been stellar for the 'Eaters , posting a 2-1 record and 1.71 ERA. In those nine appearances he has struck out 18 in 21 innings, walked just three and allowed just four earned runs.
MORALES LOOKS TO MATCH JUNIOR MARK
- Andrew Morales, 9-0 on the year, will look to pull even with his mark from 2013 this Friday.
- The right-hander was 10-0 last season, locking up the 10th victory against Cal Poly.
- Morales pitched seven innings and gave up a pair of runs and walked four against Cal State Fullerton last season but registered a no-decision and also did not factor in the decision in his final start against Long Beach State.
- Morales is third in the country with a 1.02 ERA.
- He has 103 strikeouts to sit seventh and he is also 10th in hits allowed per nine innings at 5.40.
LITCHFIELD TIES UCI RECORD
- Senior Jimmy Litchfield will look to pass the UCI career mark this week.
- The lefty made two appearances last week, tying Blair Erickson (2004-07) with his 113th career showing.
- Litchfield is 3-1 with two saves. In 23 appearances, he has fanned 19 in 34.1 innings and allowed 14 earned runs
SURREY SUFFERS COMPLETE-GAME LOSS
- Sophomore Elliot Surrey pitched a stellar, one-run, complete-game against the No. 5 Cal Poly Mustangs but still came away with the loss in a 1-0 defeat.
- The lefty had to face runners on in every inning through five but held the potent Mustang offense at bay before giving up a two-out, RBI hit in the sixth.
- He walked one in the seventh and retired the side in order in the eighth.
- The lefty lowered his ERA to 1.99 for his effort and he has pitched 81.1 innings and struck out 50.
- It's been a tale of two seasons for Surrey. In his first five starts, he posted a 4.30 earned run average but over his last eight quality starts, he boasts a 1.08 ERA and has been tagged for just seven earned runs in 58.1 innings of work.
CASSOLATO TOPS STARTERS WITH .500 EFFORT
- Redshirt freshman Evan Cassolato led the starters last week, batting 4 for 8 (.500) in three starts.
- The outfielder drove in one run, scored once and had one steal.
- He is currently batting .250 with 22 hits, six RBI and eight runs scored.
ALCANTARA, DUARTE PROVIDE OFFENSIVE PUNCH
- Adam Alcantara and Mikey Duarte made the most of their opportunities last week.
- Alcantara made the start against San Diego and was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
- He was called off the bench against Cal Poly Sunday and went 2 for 2, scoring twice.
- Alcantara is hitting .333 with 10 hits and five runs batted in in 17 games played.
- Duarte saw action against San Diego and was 1 for 1 with an RBI.
- After a start against Cal Poly Saturday in which he was held hitless, the sophomore rebounded by going 2 for 2 with a run scored Sunday after pinch-running in the sixth.
- Duarte is batting .279 with 19 hits and eight RBI.
ABOUT THE BRUINS
- UCLA is 23-25-1 overall and is led by Shane Zeile, who is batting .332 with a team-best 63 hits.
- Ty Moore tops the team with 23 RBI and shares the lead in doubles with Christoph Bono with 11.
- Starting on the mound is Grant Dyer, who is 6-4 with a 3.55 ERA. The righty has 42 strikeouts in 66 innings of work and walked 27 while giving up 29 runs.
- UCI dropped a 6-4 decision at Jackie Robinson Stadium earlier this year and trails the series, 27-49-1.
ABOUT THE TITANS
- Cal State Fullerton is 25-22 overall and 8-10 in the Big West.
- The Titans own the top ERA in the conference at 2.12 and are hitting .254 as a team.
- J.D. Davis leads the team with a .317 average and 60 hits while Matt Chapman holds the RBI lead at 41.
- Opening the series Friday is Thomas Eshelman, who is 6-3 with a 1.92 earned run average.
- Eshelman has walked just three batters in 103.1 innings pitched while fanning 81 batters and is holding teams to a .219 average.
- Last week against UC Riverside, he struck out 12 in a complete-game effort and gave up three runs on 12 hits.
- Justin Garza is slated to start Saturday and is 4-3 with a 3.12 ERA. He has issued nine free passes in 52 innings while allowing 18 earned runs.
- Garza pitched eight shutout innings, striking out six and walking three to earn the win.
- The trio of right-handers is rounded out by Grahamm Wiest. Wiest is 3-4 with a 1.49 ERA and has struck out 72 in 90. 2inings of work while walking nine.
- Wiest posted a six-inning stint and had to contend with a pair of Titan errors and allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits.
- The Anteaters were swept by CSF in 2013 at Goodwin Field. UCI trails 77-38 in the all-time series records.
