SAN JACINTO, Calif. --- High winds forced cancellation of Tuesday's third and final round of the Big West Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto.
Several attempts were made to begin the final round, but wind speeds of up to 40 miles per hour dictated that conditions were virtually unplayable.
"The start was delayed until 9:00 a.m. and we observed the first 50 minutes of play and found that golf balls weren't holding on the greens," said Rob Halvaks, Big West deputy commissioner. "With no prediction of certainty of when the conditions would be playable, we met with the SCGA rules officials and determined cancelling the final round was our only option."
With the cancellation, UCI finished fifth in the 36-hole event with a score of 588. The 'Eaters shot the second-best team score in Monday's round with a 1-under 287.
Cal State Fullerton won the tournament at 578, UC Davis placed second at 580, UC Riverside finished third at 586 and Long Beach State fourth at 587.
UCI senior Ryan Knapp tied for the best individual score of the day Monday with a 3-under 69 and finished fifth at 142 for two rounds, the highest finish in his Anteater career.
UCI sophomore Jacob Schulze and freshman Ryan O'Connor each shot 1-under 71 Monday and tied for 17th place at 148.
Junior Pete Fernandez, with a 78 Monday, placed 32nd at 152 and junior Bhuvan Potluri 39th at 155 after a 76 in the second round.
Matt Hansen of UC Davis claimed medalist honors at 136.
This was the first time the Big West tournament has been shortened since 2003, when rain allowed for only two rounds of competition.
