Irvine, Calif. – Five UC Irvine women's basketball players scored in double-figures as the Anteaters ran past Long Beach State, 78-58 at the Bren Center Thursday.
The 20-point victory is the second largest for UC Irvine (11-11, 4-4) this season following a 23-point win over New Mexico State on Dec. 18, 2013. The Anteaters improve to 6-1 at home this year. The win also gives UCI two points in the Black & Blue Rivalry Series presented by Duke's of Huntington Beach.
UCI senior forward Camille Buckley continued her dominance in rebounding, pulling down 21 to go with 15 points. Buckley has recorded back-to-back games with 21 or more boards. It is her 10th double-double of the year and 23rd of her career.
Junior forward Methlyn Onogomuho matched Buckley with a team-best 15 points and tied her career-high with 12 rebounds. It was her second double-double of the year and fourth of her career. Junior guard Madison McKenney recorded 14 points, knocking down 4-5 from three-point distance. Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto had 11 points, tied her career-best with eight assists and tied her season-high with six rebounds. Senior forward Jasmine Bernard added 10 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Vanessa Aguilar hit three three-pointers for nine points.
Long Beach State (12-10, 4-4) was led by Lauren Spargo with 12 points and six rebounds followed by Anna Kim and Jade Wilson with 10 points each. Madison Montgomery had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds off the bench.
UCI dominated the boards with a 55-35 advantage. The Anteaters shot 37.5 percent (27-72) from the floor and 68.2 percent (15-22) from the line. UCI recorded nine three-pointers to the Forty-Niners' five. The Anteaters had 19 assists which was the fourth most this season. LBSU shot 35.5 from the field (22-62) and 90 percent (9-10) from the free throw line.
UCI built a 15-point lead (22-7) on a 15-2 run which was capped with a layup by Camille Buckley at 12:07. The offense for both teams sputtered as a Forty-Niner free throw was the only point on the board for the next six minutes. LBSU missed 18 of its first 22 field goal attempts as UCI took a 29-10 lead with 4:57 to play in the first half. The Forty-Niners out-scored the Anteaters 11-5 to end the half, but UCI would hold a 34-21 advantage at the break. The teams combined for 29 turnovers in the first half.
UCI started the half with seven quick points to open a 41-21 lead with 18:55 left. Following a pair of Forty-Niner free throws, a three-pointer by Vanessa Aguilar and layup by Methlyn Onogomuho built UCI's largest lead of the game, 46-23 at 18:03. Long Beach State would close within 12 twice, the last at 11:04, but could get no closer as the Anteaters would win 78-58.
UCI will entertain UC Davis Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
