LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Third-seeded USC scored the game's first five goals en route to a 12-5 win over No. 6 seed UC Irvine in a quarterfinal game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Long Beach State Friday.
UCI (15-12) trailed 5-1 at halftime and closed to within 5-2 on a goal by Alan Robertson with 6:39 remaining in third quarter before the Trojans scored the next five goals.
Along with Robertson, four other UCI players scored one goal apiece in the game: Jared Osborn, Matt Skinner, Kyle Trush and Brendan Duffy.
Freshman goalie Byron Rivers had eight saves.
Nick Bell, Rex Butler, Kostas Genidounias and James Walters scored two goals each for the Trojans (22-4).
UCI faces No. 7 seed Pepperdine at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the consolation bracket.
