Jasmine Bernard's Career-High Leads UC Irvine Past La Verne, 90-53

Irvine, Calif. – Senior Jasmine Bernard recorded a career-high 24 points to lead UC Irvine past La Verne, 90-53 at the Bren Center Thursday.

The Anteaters 39-point victory is the largest since UCI beat Texas San Antonio 92-44 on Nov. 26, 1999 in the Bren Center. UCI ends the non-conference schedule with a 7-7 record. La Verne goes to 7-4 on the year.

Bernard went 9-13 from the floor and 6-9 from the line for her career-best 24-point performance. She also recorded a season-high eight rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Junior forward Methlyn Onogomuho recorded her third career double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto and Vanessa Aguilar each added 13 points with Tsurumoto firing a career-high six assists and four steals. Madison McKenney totaled eight points, while Kelly Meggs had seven points and Lauren Spinazze totaled six points. Jazmyne White recorded four points, five rebounds and three assists.

La Verne was paced by Shannon Irwin with 13 points and Brynn Dahmer with 10 points. Emily Myers had a team-best nine rebounds.

UCI would jump out to an 12-1 lead, holding La Verne to just a free throw until Shanon Irwin would hit a three-pointer at 12:57. Forward Jasmine Bernard would score eight consecutive in a 15-0 UCI run that open the largest lead of the half, 29-4, on a Methyln Onogomuho layup at 7:22. Two Lauren Spinazze free throws gave UCI a 41-21 lead at the half.

In the second half, six consecutive points by the Anteaters opened up a 55-27 gap at 15:56. The Anteaters would go on a 14-0 run which was ended by a Madison McKenney jumper at 2:16 put UCI ahead 90-51. The Leopards would score the final basket at 1:59 for the 90-53 final score.

UCI will open Big West Conference play traveling to Long Beach State next Thursday (Jan. 9) at 5:00 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
