IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine opened the 2013 season with a second-place finish in the adidas/UCI Invitational at the Anteater Recreation Center Fields Saturday.
Sophomore Riley Martin paced the 'Eaters with a runner-up finish of 102 runners in the 8,000-meter race in 25:28.1 as Harry Mullenga from Central Arizona won in 24:50.6.
UCI junior Alex Tebbe placed sixth in 25:45.0 and freshman Nolan Del Valle was 11th with a time of 26:25.4.
The three-man pack of Conor Stanton (26:55.2), Amir Shirif (27:01.9) and Blake Wanser (27:04.1) finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively.
Tommy Newton-Neal placed 33rd in 27:36.3 for the 'Eaters, who totaled 50 points in the team competition.
Central Arizona won the meet with 22 points while The Master's College finished third with 90.
UCI returns to action Sept. 21 in the Aztec Invitational at San Diego.
