Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Unbeaten Washington State brought the Anteaters back down to Earth with a 4-0 result Sunday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.
UCI (5-4-0) returned home after a successful 4-0-0 road trip and encountered the unbeaten Cougars from the Pac-12. Washington State (7-0-2) wasted no time with a fine goal in the third minute thanks to Cougar goal-scorer Michaela Castain. She whipped around and buried a shot from the top of the box just underneath the bar.
The Cougars would continue to be the aggressor adding a goal in the 23rd minute to go into the half up a pair.
Jocelyn Jeffers added a header off a cross in the 61st minute and Mesa Owsley's finish off a feed from Castain in the 88th minute ended the scoring.
UCI fought back in the second half outshooting the Cougars 7-4, but was unable to convert. Zoya Farzaneh had the best chance as her shot rang off the crossbar. Jordan Bruce and Mady Solow each howled free kicks by the goal to no avail.
Jenn Randazzo kept WSU out of the net twice including a brilliant play to stop Castain on a breakaway opportunity in the first half.
For the Anteaters, they will not take to the pitch again until October 4 and 6 as they head north to UCSB and Cal Poly to begin conference play.
