Anteaters Open Season, Defeat Marist 1-0

IRVINE, Calif. --- Enrique Cardenas' game-winner in the 77th minute gave UCI enough for the 1-0 win Friday night at Anteater Stadium as it opened the 2013 season against the Marist Red Foxes.

Cardenas came off the bench to have a fine performance on the night. He and Dennis Martinez teamed up for some theatrics early in the second half. Martinez jumped on a cross and clanged a shot off the post. The return to the box would fall to Cardenas whose shot was deflected wide by Red Fox keeper Anthony Sokalski to keep the match scoreless.

Cardenas had three shots, all on net in the match, including the 77th minute goal; a reception through the midfield from Mitchell Alvarez that left Cardenas all alone. He would slide a shot past the keeper and inside the left post to put the 'Eaters on top.

UCI (1-0-0) controlled a majority of the match evident by the 13-3 shot advantage and 9-1 corner kick advantage.

Michael Breslin was sparsely tested in net. Marist (0-1-0) actually drew first blood in the shot department with a wicked attempt on goal off a free kick that Breslin was keen to.

That would remain is lone stop while Sokalski denied six Anteater shots.

UCI start the season off with a win for the 10th consecutive year while staying unbeaten for the 13th straight year. The next test for UCI will be the Iona Gaels on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 2:00 p.m. at Anteater Stadium following the women's soccer match.
