HEADERS

  • UCI men's soccer has won its last nine season openers.
  • The 'Eaters are unbeaten in their last 12 season openers (10-0-2).
  • This is the 12th time UC Irvine will have started the season off at home in the last 14 seasons.
  • Cameron Iwasa led the squad with six goals in 2012.
  • Newcomers Pavle Atanackovic and Gor Kirakosyan each scored four goals in 2012, good for second on the club.
  • All five game-winning goals in 2012 were scored by different Anteaters (Cardenas, Hayes III, Iwasa, Kirakosyan, and Santana)
  • UCI averaged 608 fans in 2012 home matches.

FREE KICKS

  • UC Irvine is 6-1 against non-conference opponents at home since 2011.
  • UCI's non-conference schedule features the Big East, Big Ten, Pac 12, WCC, MAAC, and WAC conferences. The Big East, Pac 12, and MAAC are represented twice.
  • The Anteaters were 1-6 vs. ranked opponents in 2012. They have six schools receiving votes on their 2013 schedule.
  • UCI is 8-2-2 all-time in the month of August, 6-1-2 at home.

EARLY RETURNS

  • The 'Eaters bring back 10 starters from the 2012 squad including preseason award-winners Cameron Iwasa and Marco Franco.
  • Michael Breslin ranked second the Big West with 80 saves in 2012.
  • UCI had 99 corner kicks in 2012, second-most in the conference.
  • The Anteaters scored 20 of their 26 goals in the second half last season.
  • UCI received a yellow card in 18 of 20 matches in 2012.

SUBBING IN

  • UCI brings in four newcomers to the fold, all freshmen.
  • Arya Haghighi was named an ESPN Top 150 recruit.
  • Leo Klink is a three-time state champion and two-time state player of the year in Hawai'i.

CORNERS

  • The Big West Tournament has expanded to six teams in 2013. Division winners will receive a bye. The second place team will face the third place squad from the other division in the first round.
  • UCI plays 19 matches in the 2013 season: two exhibition, 11 non-conference, eight Big West, nine home, 10 road
  • The 'Eaters' five non-conference home games feature four NCAA tournament participants from 2012 that won a total of five tournament matches.
  • UCI's match at BYU will be broadcast on BYUtv.

IN THE BOOKS

  • Michael Breslin's 11-save match against Gonzaga on Sept. 12, 2012 marked just the second double-digit save performance in the last eight seasons.
  • Cameron Iwasa was the only 'Eater to start and play in all 20 matches last season.

OPPOSING VIEWS

  • The 'Eaters open the 2013 season with a pair of MAAC opponents in Marist and Iona. In the preseason poll, Iona is picked to finish second while Marist is eighth.
  • UCI and Marist will be meeting for the first time.
  • The Red Foxes finished 2012 at 5-10-1 winning three of their matches on the road.
  • Top returners are senior Evan Southworth (4 G, 2 A) and senior keeper Anthony Sokalski (63 saves, 3 shutouts).
  • UCI defeated Iona 3-1 in their only meeting in 1997.
  • The Gaels finished 2012 at 7-11-0 which included a 1-0 loss to UC Riverside and a 3-1 win over No. 25 Monmouth.
  • Franklin Castellanos leads the returners appearing in all 18 matches with two goals and a team-high six assists. Samuel Adjei scored four goals in 18 matches. Both were tabbed on the Preseason All-MAAC Team.

SOCCER AT THE NEXT LEVEL

  • Brad Evans has earned a spot on the U.S. National squad this year. He has made 11 total appearances including three World Cup qualifiers in 2013. He scored his first international goal in a WCQ against Jamaica, a game-winner in stoppage time.
  • Evans is also a member of the Seattle Sounders FC. He has played in 18 matches this season scoring three goals and assisting on five. Evans ranks in the top five in all major Sounders career categories.
  • Amani Walker and Andrew Fontein are teammates on the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League. Walker has two goals, one game-winner, and two assists in nine matches. Fontein has 14 saves in three starts.
  • Fontein was a part of the 2012 NASL Championship squad that defeated Walker and Miguel Ibarra.
  • Ibarra is a member of the Minnesota United FC. In 11 matches, Ibarra has one goal and played in 937 minutes.
