NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine freshman Melanie Speech finished 10th in the heptathlon that concluded Saturday at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships.
Speech (San Francisco/Lowell) compiled 4,395 points in the competition at the Northridge Track & Field Complex. This was her first heptathlon.
In Saturday's three events, she recorded marks of 16-4 ¼ in the long jump and 125-7 in the javelin throw, and ran a time of 2:42.66 in the 800 meters. Her javelin mark topped the field.
Samantha Balentine of Hawai'i won the heptathlon with 5,060 points.
UCI competes in the Big West Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Northridge.
