NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine freshman Melanie Speech scored over 2,600 points on the first day of the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships Friday.
Speech, competing in her first heptathlon, scored 2,664 points in four events and sits in 10th place at the Northridge Track & Field Complex.
The graduate of Lowell High School in San Francisco had the top effort of the 15 competitors in the shot put with a mark of 41-0 ¼. Her other times/marks Friday were 16.41 in the 100-meter hurdles, 4-6 ¼ in the high jump and 25.81 in the 200 meters.
Samantha Balentine of Hawai'i leads with 3,235 points.
Action concludes Saturday with three events – the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters.
