Itos Aikhionbare Leads UCI on 1st Day of Big West Championships

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Sophomore Itos Aikhionbare led UC Irvine Friday on the first day of competition at the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships in Northridge.

Aikhionbare finished second in the shot put with a mark of 50-11 ½ as Irene Kujore of UC Santa Barbara won the event at 51-7 ¾.

UCI's Carlotta Pham placed sixth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:36.13.

In the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries, freshman Megan Benson had a time of 14.07, fifth-fastest in Anteater history, to advance to Saturday's final.  Paige Bushnell also qualified for the final with a time of 14.18.

KayC Wharton's qualified for the final in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 61.14, which ranks No. 8 in UCI history.  Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (61.52) and Bushnell (61.78) also advanced to the final.

Three from UCI qualified for Saturday's final in the 1500 meters after Friday's prelims:  Sakia Sailinuu (4:35.43), Kaycee Holcomb (4:37.04) and Samia Sailinuu (4:39.41).

Sakia Sailinuu also advances to the 800-meter final following her time of 2:14.55 Friday.
