IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine defended its home turf with a hard-nosed victory over CSUN Sunday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Hannah Croghan found the scoring touch with a pair of third-period goals after a stagnant first half for the Anteaters. UCI (16-8, 4-1) missed on its first seven shots as CSUN (20-10, 2-3) took advantage with a 1-0 lead after the first period. Marisa Young carried CSUN with three goals in the match.
UC Irvine's defense remained strong allowing just the one goal in the first half. Jillian Yocum stood tall in net saving 13 shots on the day. The 'Eaters forced numerous turnovers and totaled 11 steals on the defensive end. Hillary Estrada snatched three of those and Kelsey Thornton had two as part of her sparkling defensive day.
The 'Eaters really took hold of the game in the third period forcing two penalties by the Matadors which Croghan and Cambria Shockley would each convert.
UC Irvine continues to stay near the top of the Big West with a 4-1 record in the conference and 16-8 overall. The team is off until Saturday, April 13th when it hosts UC Santa Barbara in a 12:00 p.m. match.
