UCI Men's Golf Team Opens Play at Big West Championship

 

SAN JACINTO, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's golf team opened competition Sunday in the Big West Conference Championship at the Country Club at Soboba Springs.

UCI and UC Santa Barbara are tied for ninth place after each team carded an opening-round 305.  Hawai'i leads at 292, Cal State Fullerton is second at 293 and Long Beach State third at 297.

Nainoa Calip of Hawai'i and Corey Gard from Fullerton are tied for the lead after each shot 3-under 69.

Senior Michael Yang led the 'Eaters Sunday with an even-par 72 and is tied for third.

Sophomore Pete Fernandez is in 19th place after opening with a 75, juniors Allan Jun and Travis Russell are tied for 40th after each shot a 79, and freshman Jacob Schulze is 46th after a first-round 81.

The tournament continues with 18 holes each on Monday and Tuesday.
