Tough Second Round Pushes UCI Back at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. --- The UC Irvine men's golf endured a tough second round and fell back on the first day of the 67th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz Saturday.

UCI is tied for 12th in the 14-team tournament entering Sunday's final round.  UCLA leads with a 36-hole score of 702, California is second at 711 and Stanford third at 717.  The 'Eaters, who were in a three-way tie for ninth following the first round, have a total of 742, including 31-over in the second round, and are tied with Hawai'i for 12th.

Pontus Widegren of UCLA is the individual leader at 5-under 135 on rounds of 66-69 on the par-70 course.

UCI sophomore Pete Fernandez shot a 71 in the second round after opening with a 74 and is in 31st place at 145.

Junior Travis Russell is in 41st at 147 (71-76), junior Allan Jun (68-83) and senior Michael Yang (72-79) are tied for 62nd at 151, freshman Jacob Schulze is 71st at 153 (76-77) and senior Mickey Chan is 84th at 157 (79-78).
