LA JOLLA, Calif. --- Junior Lacey Surak had the top finish for UC Irvine on the first day of competition at the Cal/Nevada Championships in La Jolla Friday.
Surak finished fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 135-7 to gain six points for UCI. Freshman Melanie Speech picked up two points with an eighth-place mark of 119-5.
Senior Carlotta Pham placed fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:11.82 to earn five team points for the Anteaters.
Sophomore Itos Aikhionbare picked up two points in the discus throw with an eighth-place mark of 151-0.
A trio of Anteaters qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (62.55), sophomore Paige Bushnell (62.94) and senior KayC Wharton (62.95) each advanced out of Friday's preliminaries.
The meet concludes Saturday at UC San Diego.
