No. 21 UC Irvine Blanked By Portland

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was held to five hits in a 2-0 loss to Portland Friday at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.

Portland got onto the scoreboard in the first, sandwiching a pair of outs with two walks to put runners on first and second for Beau Fraser, who drove a 2-2 pitch up the middle to score Kramer Scott. Chet Thompson followed with an RBI single to give the Pilots a 2-0 edge.

Starter Andrew Thurman (1-1) settled down after the first and did not allow a runner past second before handing the ball off to Jimmy Litchfield with two outs in the seventh.

However, that was all the Pilots would need as starter Travis Radke limited UCI to three hits in 6.2 innings, striking out 11 and walking four to improve to 1-1. Billy Sahlinger pitched 2.1 innings to complete the shutout and post his second save.

The Anteaters threatened with a runner in scoring position in five of the nine innings but came up empty.  UCI left 11 runners on base in their second loss of the season (7-2).

Jimmy Litchfield pitched 1.1 hitless innings in relief, striking out two and Phillip Ferragamo also held the Pilots hitless in an inning of work.

Ronnie Shaeffer led UCI with two hits.

The series continues with a double-header Saturday beginning at noon.
