CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. --- UC Irvine junior Travis Russell captured the individual title of The Folino Invitational that concluded Tuesday at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.
Russell, who shot an even-par 72 in the final round, won with a birdie on the second playoff hole over Sacramento State's Ryan Williams and Loyola Marymount's Tyler Torano. All three had finished 54 holes with 2-under totals of 214 on the "Ike" Eisenhower Course.
Sophomore Pete Fernandez placed fourth at 216 after a final-round 75 and junior Allan Jun was eighth at 220 following his round of 74 Tuesday.
Freshman Jacob Schulze (79) finished 17th at 227 and senior Michael Yang (78) was 31st at 233. Senior Mickey Chan (84), playing as an individual, was 27th at 23 2.
The 'Eaters finished second in the team competition with a three-round total of 876 as Long Beach State placed first at 872. Loyola Marymount was third at 895 in the nine-team tournament.
The runner-up finish was UCI's highest finish in a tournament since a similar showing in the 2011 Folino Invitational that was played at Oak Creek Golf Club that year.
Coach Paul Smolinski's 'Eaters, who have recorded four consecutive top-five finishes, return to action Monday and Tuesday in the North Ranch Intercollegiate at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.
