Sacramento State Outlasts UC Irvine, 99-94

Sacramento, Calif. – Sacramento State drained 21 three-pointers to beat UC Irvine 99-94 at The Nest Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets went 21-55 from long range, setting a new NCAA record for most three-pointers attempted in a game.

UCI's 94 points is the most points scored since Feb. 25, 1988 when the Anteaters beat San Jose State, 97-57 in Irvine.

UCI evens its record to 5-5, while Sacramento State improves to 7-1 overall.

Camille Buckley recorded her fifth double-double of the year with a team-best 22 points and 10 rebounds. She was 9-12 from the field and 4-4 from the line. Senior guard Jennifer Tsurumoto totaled 19 points and a career-high seven assists. Senior guard Vanessa Aguilar came off the bench to hit four three-pointers and total 16 points. Senior forward Jazmyne White recorded 12 points, while junior forward Methlyn Onogomuho had a career-best 12 rebounds. Senior guard Kelly Meggs added eight points and junior guard Madison McKenney recorded five points. 10 of the 11 UCI players scored at least two points.

UCI shot 52 percent (39-75) from the field, 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line and 40 percent (8-20) on threes. The Anteaters out-rebounded the Hornets 46-41. UCI converted 16 Sac State turnovers into 24 points.

Sacramento State had six players with double-digit scoring led by Alle Moreno with 22 on five three-pointers, including the game winner. Hallie Gennett went 7-16 from three-point distance, totaling 21 points. Gigi Hascheff had 14 points, while Fantasia Hillard totaled 13 points and 12 assists, Andrea Chenier had 12 points and Margaret Huntington added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

For the game, the Hornets shot 40.2 percent (33-82) from the field, 80 percent (8-10) from the line and 38.2 percent (21-55) from three.

UC Irvine started the game with a 13-2 lead and watched the Hornets knock down four three-pointers in a 16-4 run to take the 18-17 lead at 12:57.  The Hornets would lead by five (31-26) before the Anteaters scored seven straight to take a 33-31 lead on a Tsurumoto driving layup at 7:22. Sacramento State would build another five point gap (42-37) only to watch UCI go on a 9-3 spurt capped by a Kelly Meggs' three-pointer at 46-45 with 2:36 left in the half. The game would be tied three more times before Jazmyne White would end the scoring with a layup to give the Anteaters a 55-53 advantage at the break.

UCI would begin the second half on a 10-5 run to take its largest lead, 65-58 with 15:38 remaining. The Hornets answered with four straight three-pointers to go up 70-65 at 12:10. The Anteaters would return the favor going on a 17-3 run which included three consecutive three-pointers by Vanessa Aguilar to put the Anteaters ahead 82-76 with 7:36 to go. A Jazmyne White jumper at 3:41 gave UCI a 90-86 lead before Sacramento State would score six straight and to knot the score at 90-90 with 1:46 to play. The score was tied twice more, the last on a Tsurumoto basket (94-94) with 51 seconds to go. Alle Moreno knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner with 29 seconds remaining. UCI could not convert on its final possession and was forced to foul Moreno who added a pair of free throws with six seconds left for the 99-94 victory.

UCI returns home after playing the last nine games away from Irvine, to host New Mexico State Wednesday (Dec. 18) at 7:00 p.m, in the Bren Center.
