STOCKTON, Calif. --- Eighth-seeded UC Irvine was defeated by No. 5 seed California, 16-8, in consolation semifinal Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament in Stockton.
Senior Mitch Wise and sophomore Tyler Mancuso scored two goals each for UCI (13-14).
The 'Eaters trailed just 4-3 after the first quarter, but the Bears broke the game open in the second period, outscoring UCI, 6-1, to take a 10-4 halftime lead.
In the first quarter, Bojan Hrlec gave UCI an early 1-0 lead before Cal scored the next three goals.
Mancuso tied the game at 3-3 with 2:30 left in the opening period before Max Schell gave the
Bears the lead for good at 4-3 on a goal with eight seconds remaining in the first.
Aleksa Saponjic led Cal with three goals and four other players scored two each.
Senior goalie Alex Kazmier had 11 saves for the 'Eaters.
UCI faces UC Santa Barbara in the seventh-place game Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton.
