IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine rebounded in a big way from a Saturday loss in defeating Eastern Washington, 81-58, Sunday in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project Irvine Subregional at the Bren Events Center.
Freshman guard Luke Nelson scored 19 points, sophomore guard Alex Young 16 and junior forward Will Davis II had 10 points and eight rebounds for the 'Eaters, who improved to 4-3 on the season.
Freshman center Mamadou Ndiaye registered a school and Big West Conference record 10 blocked shots, adding seven rebounds and five points as UCI bounced back from a 74-68 loss to Boston University on Saturday.
Sophomore Dominique Dunning had nine points and three boards off the bench and sophomore Mike Best scored seven points in 20 reserve minutes.
Davis was named Most Valuable Player of the Irvine Subregional and Young was named to the all-tournament team.
Tyler Harvey led EWU (4-2) with 21 points and also was named to the all-tournament team, as was teammate Venky Jois, who had eight points and six boards Sunday.
UCI closed out the first half with a 12-0 run over the final 3:28 as Dunning scored five points during that stretch to give the 'Eaters a 43-22 lead at halftime.
UCI maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout the second half, building its largest margin to 31 at 65-34 on a three by Young with 13:23 remaining.
The 'Eaters had a season-low six turnovers their bench outscored EWU's reserves, 27-6.
UCI hit 11 of 19 threes in the victory with Nelson going 5 of 7 and Young 4 for 6 from beyond the arc. UCI shot 40.3 percent from the field for the game to the Eagles' 30 percent. The 'Eaters were 16 of 24 from the foul line to 18 of 25 by EWU.
Next game for UCI is at Sacramento Nov. 30 at 7:00, followed by a Nov. 2 contest at California (7:00 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
