UC Irvine Downed by No. 5 Cal in MPSF Action

 

BERKELEY, Calif. --- UC Irvine stayed close in the first half but fifth-ranked California broke the game open in the second half in defeating the Anteaters, 17-4, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley Sunday.

Ninth-ranked UCI (12-12, 0-7 MPSF) trailed just 2-1 after one quarter and 7-4 at halftime.  Bojan Hrlec scored twice in the first half and Jared Osborn and Pablo Carballo added single goals.

Cal (16-6, 4-3) scored 10 unanswered goals in the second half.  

Colin Mulcahy led the Golden Bears with four goals and four other players scored three apiece.

UCI hosts Pepperdine next Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in the regular-season finale.  It will be Senior Day as Anteater seniors Lawrence Bardelli, Bojan Hrlec, Alex Kazmier and Mitch Wise will be recognized prior to the game.
