LOS CABOS, Mexico --- UC Irvine overcame a 13-shot deficit to win the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate Tuesday at Cabo del Sol Golf Club in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Playing the final round on the Ocean Course, the 'Eaters shot 290 to win the tournament with a 54-hole total of 882, one shot better than San Francisco (883). The Dons held the lead after two rounds but shot 304 Tuesday. Towson placed third at 886 in the 11-team tournament.
The victory was UCI's first tourney title in nearly 3 ½ years since winning the 2010 Big West Conference Championship.
Anteater junior Pete Fernandez shot a final-round 72 and finished third with a 54-hole score of 218. Jobim Carlos of San Francisco was medalist at 212 after a 74 on Tuesday and Tyler Thomas (70) of Texas State was second at 217.
UCI senior Travis Russell placed 13th at 221 after a 75 in the last round while senior Allan Jun (77) and sophomore Jacob Schulze (71) tied for 21st place at 224.
Freshman Ryan O'Connor fired a 72 Tuesday and finished 35th at 229.
Coach Paul Smolinski's Anteaters return to action Oct. 21-22 in the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, which will be the 'Eaters' final competition of the fall.
The 34th annual Anteater Invitational is scheduled for Jan. 27-28 at Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa.
