'Eaters Stymied in Big West Opener, Fall 1-0

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- UCI women's soccer shelled out a vicious offensive attack in its conference opener, but was turned away, 1-0, by the host UCSB Gauchos Friday evening in Harder Stadium.

The two schools posted a rather pedestrian first half with just four total shots and none on frame until Madison Beckley ran onto a header in the box to give UCSB (7-4-1, 1-0-0) the 1-0 edge in the 44th minute.

UCI (5-5-0, 0-1-0) opened up the offense in the second half holding a majority of the possession along with a 10-5 shot differential, however, Gaucho keeper, Beth Ritter, weathered the storm with five saves and no goals to show for it.

Eight different 'Eaters posted a shot in the match which included five shots on net coming from five different players.

Corey Tobin returned to the net for the first time since the third match of the season to stop three shots in the loss.

UCI will look for redemption Sunday at 12:00 p.m. as it travels to Cal Poly for more Big West action.
