UCI Invitational Results / Schedule
IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior All-American Mitch Wise scored a game-high four goals, but UC Irvine fell to Long Beach State, 13-10 in overtime, in the seventh-place game of the UCI Invitational Sunday at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Kyle Trush added two goals for the 'Eaters, who fell to 11-6 on the season.
Wise snapped a 4-4 halftime tie on a goal with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Trush converted a power-play goal at 3:50 to put UCI up 6-4.
After Milos Vrzic scored for Long Beach State to draw the 49ers within 6-5, goals by UCI's Jared Osborn (3:11) and Pablo Carballo (1:06) gave the 'Eaters an 8-5 lead before Vrzic scored again with 13 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 8-6.
Wise scored a goal in the fourth quarter but Zacchary Kappos netted three scores in the period, the last at 1:20, to pull Long Beach State even at 9-9 at the end of regulation.
Devin Mefford scored at 2:39 of the first three-overtime session for a 10-9 49er lead, but Wise tied the game at 10-10 on a goal at 2:14. Mefford scored again with 44 seconds left and Ricardo Guimares added a goal with nine seconds remaining to put Long Beach State up 12-10 heading into the second three-minute extra period. Joey Fabian scored the lone goal in that session for the final score.
The 'Eaters and 49ers meet again in UCI's next game Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
