HENGELO, The Netherlands --- Last year about this time, CoCo Goodson had aspirations of playing in the Women's Professional Soccer league after being drafted 12th overall by the Philadelphia Independence. Leading the Anteaters to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances had lifted her name to prominence amongst the professional ranks, and she was ready to help deliver an elusive title to the Independence, a team that had fallen in the league final in both of its years of existence.
A few weeks later, the team and league had evaporated leaving Goodson to look towards other channels to continue her soccer. Fortunately, the pipeline to The Netherlands had opened a year earlier from another 'Eater alum in Danielle de Seriere as the two would team up overseas. Another chance to vault a team to the top of the mountain was in front of her on an FC Twente team that was on the rise to unseat powerhouse ADO Den Haag and defends its 2010-11 title.
The squad came up short as the runner-up, but were about to unleash a secret weapon upon the Dutch league. The 2012-13 coming-out party for the center back has been a revelation. She is one of three players that has started all 14 matches and played all 1,260 minutes en route to a 10-0-4 record atop the BeNe League at the midway point of the season. Goodson has been a defensive force anchoring a back line that has allowed just 12 goals in its 14 matches while also converting on assists and scoring a vital game-winning goal in the 80th-minute in a game against lauded Dutch club Ajax.
The Dutch publication "Voetbal Centraal" recently wrote an article on Goodson's journey and the strides she has made since joining the club. Some things she has noticed since the move have been the fact that the reserved Goodson is less talkative then she was back in the states, and trying to overcome that and become a "leader" and "get out my comfort zone" she goes on to say.
Goodson is also loving all the new experiences and soaking up as much of the world as possible while also striving to return to her "old level". She is determined to take the reins of the squad stating that, "hopefully there is a new 'CoCo' from now on, that the leader of the past will come back."
