SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- No. 6 UCI scored a win in it's season-opening match dropping the 20th-ranked Roadrunners of CSUB, 11-8, Saturday morning in the UCSB Gaucho Invite.
UC Irvine (1-0) led early, 4-3, after one period, but couldn't make any distance on CSUB until the second quarter as it out scored the Runners 5-2 including two of freshman McKenna Mitchell's three goals.
the pace slowed in the second half as CSUB crept back into it, but Jillian Yocum and her 12 saves kept the Runners at arm's length to finish out the 11-8 victory.
The 'Eaters finish out day one with a 2:50 p.m. match against the top-ranked Cardinal of Stanford.
