Anteaters Dropped By Boise State At Arizona Desert Classic

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. --- UC Irvine (5-8) was unable to avenge a loss to Broncos (7-7) last week, losing to Boise State, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 at the Arizona Desert Classic, hosted by the Wildcats.

Aly Squires was named to her third All-Tournament team this season, after averaging 4.10 kills and 46 points over three matches. Squires paced the Anteaters today with 14 kills and hitting .375 on the day. Marissa Alvarez recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs and Kristin Winkler picked up 16 digs in the effort. Marisa Bubica, who put away six kills against the Broncos, was also named to the all-tournament team after averaging 3.30 kills per set to go along with 10 digs and eight total blocks.

The Anteaters found themselves trailing 6-1 to open the match but whittled at the deficit to shrink the gap to two point at 10-8 on a kill by Squires. However, a trio of three-point rallies by the Broncos extended BSU's lead to seven at 19-12 and Brittany Reardon would post the kill on set point.

A pair of Boise State blocks in the second set highlighted a four-point rally as the Broncos led early again, 8-3. UCI never threatened and Boise State's .289 hitting percentage would carry the team to a two-set lead.

Squires put away three kills in the first five plays but at 5-5, Boise State scored six straight to build an 11-5 lead. UCI was unable to answer and the Broncos put the match out of reach with a second six-point run to lead by 10 (18-8) points. Alyssa Gammel delivered the final kill as the Broncos completed the sweep.
