DAVIS, Calif. --- For the second straight day, a UC Davis starting pitcher went the distance against the Anteaters as UCI fell to UC Davis, 3-1 Saturday at Dobbins Stadium.
Aggie starter Tom Briner gave up just one run on five hits and did not walk a batter.
Clutch hits eluded UCI again as the Anteaters were unable to take advantage of three leadoff hits in the first six innings. UCI was held scoreless until the ninth, avoiding the shutout on Jordan Fox's RBI grounder to drive in Tommy Reyes, who had tripled with one out in the ninth.
UC Davis got on the board in the second, hitting a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits against starter Crosby Slaught. After giving up a leadoff single, Slaught's pickoff attempt went high, allowing Eric Johnson to take second. That set the scene for Brett Morgan, whose 2-1 single up the middle scored Johnson. Tino Lipson followed with a clean hit through the right side to drive in Morgan.
David Popkins tacked a run on in the third, doubling in Ryan Allgrove to give UC Davis a three-run advantage. That capped the scoring for the Aggies as Phillip Ferragamo pitched four shutout innings, walking two and scattering three hits in relief for the 'Eaters.
Slaught fell to 7-7 after giving up three runs on five hits in four innings of work.
The two teams will take 12-11 Big West marks in the series finale Sunday.
