UC Irvine Shut Out By UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Irvine was shut out for just the third time this season, losing 4-0 to UC Davis Friday at Dobbins Stadium.

Anthony Kubpens held the Anteaters to five hits in the complete-game effort to improve to 5-4. The lefty scattered five hits and struck out two while walking three in the win.

The Aggies scored two early runs off starter Andrew Thurman in the bottom of the first with Nick Lynch and Paul Politi hitting back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

Politi tagged Thurman for another run in the third with a single to the right-center gap to drive in David Popkins, who was hit by the pitch. Kevin Barker made it a four-run lead after smacking a two-out single up the middle to score Nick Lynch.

Thurman shut out the Aggies over the next three innings before handing the ball off to Mitch Merten in the seventh. Merten issued a one-out walk but Jerry McClanahan threw a strike to Tommy Reyes to snuff out Popkins' stolen base attempt. Following a second base on balls, Merten hit Politi with the pitch to put runners on the first and second with two outs. Mark Trentacosta was called out of the bullpen and induced a grounder to short to end the threat.

Trentacosta gave up a leadoff single in the eighth but retired the next three batters to hold the Aggies to one hit in 1.1 relief innings.

Thurman, who had a six-game win streak snapped, pitched six innings and struck out five while giving up four runs on six hits to end his sophomore campaign at 8-3.
