UC Irvine Hosts No. 21 San Diego, Cal State Bakersfield

UCI FACES TOREROS, ROADRUNNERS: UC Irvine (28-30, 12-9 Big West) will play five straight home games, beginning with a re-match against No. 21 San Diego Tuesday (May. 15) at 6:30 p.m. This weekend Cal State Bakersfield comes to town in UCI's final three-game series at Cicerone Field. UCI caps off the homestand against UCLA next Tuesday (May 22).

SENIOR DAY SUNDAY: The Anteaters will honor seniors, Christian Ramirez (Santa Ana/Cypress College), Tommy Reyes (Rancho Cucamonga/Bishop Amat HS), Crosby Slaught (Santa Barbara/HS), Nick Hoover (Alta Loma/Riverside CC), D.J. Crumlich (Irvine/HS) and Jordan Fox (Hacienda Heights/Bishop Amat HS) this Sunday in a pre-game ceremony.

PARKING ADVISORY SUNDAY: Due to a graduation ceremony being held in the Bren Center at 2:00 p.m. and a soccer tournament being held on Crawford Field all day, parking in the Mesa Structure will be impacted. Fans planning on attending Sunday's baseball game should allow themselves plenty of time to park.

THURMAN EXTENDS STREAK: Sophomore Andrew Thurman (Orange/Orange Lutheran HS) made it five straight wins after battling Cal State Northridge through seven innings and holding the Matadors to three runs. The right-hander, who had tossed three straight complete games, gave up three runs in the second inning and then shut down the CSUN offense through the next five.

Thurman, who will make the start Friday against Cal State Bakersfield, improved to 7-2 on the year and owns a 2.71 ERA. He has struck out 58 in 83 innings of work.

MCCLANAHAN, MC-CLUTCH: Jerry McClanahan (Temple City/Bishop Amat HS) batted .556 (5 for 9)  with three RBI in three games last week. McClanahan was 2 for 4, driving in the game-winning and insurance runs in the team's lone win of the week. He then came off the bench and slapped a pinch-hit single up the middle to drive in a run. He added two more hits Sunday and scored once.

McClanahan is batting .299 with 23 hits, including five doubles and two home runs to go along with 16 RBI.

FOX CONTINUES CONSISTENCY: Jordan Fox batted .313, posting five hits and two RBI in action. The senior first baseman hit in four straight games and has reached safely in 12 consecutive contests. He reached safely twice in all four games and posted single hits in each of the first three before going 2 for 2 in his first two at-bats Sunday.

Fox is hitting .326 with a team-high 60 hits and 31 RBI. He is also the team leader with 10 stolen bases.

SLAUGHT TO START TUESDAY: Crosby Slaught will make the start Tuesday against San Diego. The right-hander pitched three innings Saturday and allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit. Slaught walked one and hit three batters in the outing. He was hit with the loss to fall to 6-5 but tops the 'Eaters with 15 starts. He has struck out 47 in 67.1 innings and is holding opposing teams to a .213 batting average.

CRUMLICH WALKS INTO FOURTH PLACE: D.J. Crumlich was walked four times last week and now moves into fourth in the UCI career records with 93 base on balls. Crumlich hit .286 (4 for 14) with three RBI last week.

He had a hit in three of the four games and capped the weekend off by going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Crumlich is batting .312 with 59 hits and a team-high 13 doubles. He is second on the team with 22 walks to go with 16 RBI and seven steals.

TRENTACOSTA HAS ANOTHER STRONG START: Junior Mark Trentacosta (Orange/Golden West CC) gave UCI another solid start on the mound, shutting out San Diego through four innings before yielding a single run in the fifth. Trentacosta struck out one and walked two while scattering three hits.

Saturday, he was called from the bullpen against CS Northridge and pitched a perfect fourth before giving up a two-run double in the fifth.

Trentacosta has made 16 appearances and is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA. He has struck out 22 in 28 innings and walked five while allowing eight earned runs.

LOOKING AT SAN DIEGO: San Diego is ranked No. 21 in this week's Baseball America poll and is 38-13 overall. The Toreros are hitting .317 and are led by Corey LaVier, who has 72 hits. Topping the charts in RBI is Kris Bryant, who has 56 runs batted in on 71 hits and boasts a .372 batting average.

Making the start on the hill is right-hander Michael Wagner. Wagner is 3-1 with a 2.27 ERA. He has 42 strikeouts in 43.2 innings and walked 14 while giving up 11 earned runs.

THE SERIES: San Diego captured a 4-1 win from the Anteaters last Tuesday but UCI leads the series 49-42-1.

LOOKING AT THE ROADRUNNERS: Cal State Bakersfield is 20-25 on the season. The Roadrunners own a .261 batting average and are paced by Oscar Sanay, who has 57 hits. Cael Brockmeyer and Tyler Shryock share the team-high in RBI with 26 apiece.

The pitching staff holds a 3.75 ERA with starter Jeff McKenzie leading the CSUB with a 2.31 ERA in 13 starts. McKenzie is 5-4 on the year while Taylor Aikenhead is 6-3 in 10 starts.

THE SERIES: UCI is 5-1 against Cal State Bakersfield. The Anteaters' lone loss was a 5-4, 10-inning defeat in the series opener in 2011 at Bakersfield.
