IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI was well-represented in the all-conference selections with three singles players and two doubles pairs making the final cut.
Kristina Smith made the most noise as UCI's only first-team singles selection after going 16-7 on the year, 13-4 as the No. 1 and 6-2 in the Big West. For Smith, it is her first first-team award and second award all-time joining her second-team selection in 2011. This is the 22nd such award for UCI making her the 13th different Anteater to make the first team, and it is also the 15th consecutive year that UCI has received a first-team honor.
Smith also populated the doubles column alongside sophomore Franziska Goettsching. The duo made honorable mention marking the second time Smith has been honored while for Goettsching, it is her first ever All-Big West selection. They are the sixth duo to make the honorable mention list. Together, they went 17-4 and 16-2 in dual matches.
Goettsching also earned singles honors with another honorable mention. She went 12-18 on the year and 9-12 as the team's primary No. 3. Goettsching is the seventh different 'Eater to be named honorable mention, and it is the sixth straight year UCI has earned an honorable mention in singles.
The third member to be named singles All-Big West was Courtney Byron. The senior was selected to the second team after a 16-12 year and 13-9 dual record between positions No. 1 and 2. Byron is now a four-time all-conference recipient matching her second-team honor as a freshman and first-team honors received in 2010 and 2011. She joins Anna Bentzer and Jonni Seymour as the only three Anteaters to be named All-Big West in each of their four years.
Byron was also included on the doubles side with partner, Hannah Holladay. The duo earned second-team honors going 14-13 on the year and 10-10 as the No. 1. For Byron, it is her third second-team honor, and she joins Bentzer, Seymour, and Inna Agababian as the only Anteaters to earn four doubles honors.
Holladay, like Goettsching, earned her first All-Big West honor. She also went 2-0 in singles this year, and helped UCI get off the snide after being shutout of doubles awards in 2011.
For UC Irvine, it has now accrued 50 All-Big West singles selections all-time by 24 different players. UCI has also earned 28 All-Big West doubles selections with 27 different duos made up of 30 different players.
