IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine's 4x400 relay broke a 21-year-old school record at the 18th annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational Sunday at Anteater Stadium.
KayC Wharton, Amber Middleton, Kelly Collins and Ericka Nowell recorded a time of 3:42.69 in finishing second in Sunday's race, including an anchor leg of 54.4 by Nowell. That relay time passed the previous school mark of 3:42.87 set by Desiree Bracey, Shelly Tochluk, Sjondrala Vaughn and Maria Akraka in 1991.
Nowell finished third in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.82 and Middleton was ninth in 60.63.
Middleton placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.83. In that race, Joanna Hayes, running unattached, set new meet and stadium records with a time of 12.87, breaking the previous record of 13.01 set by Jackie Joyner-Kersee in 1992.
Other top-10 finishes for UCI Sunday included Itos Aikhionbare placing third in the shot put with a mark of 44-1 ¼ and 10th in the discus throw (138-6), Sakia Sailinuu finishing seventh in the 800 meters (2:12.40), and Kelsi Sando's ninth-place showing in the high jump at 5-1.
UCI hosts the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships Friday and Saturday, and the Big West Track & Field Championships May 11-12 at Anteater Stadium.
