IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine senior Brett Matejka ran a career-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday night as the 18th annual adidas/Steve Scott Invitational began at Anteater Stadium.

Matejka finished third in the race with a time of 9:13.26, shaving 11 seconds off his previous best time.

Steven Melena placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:34.77, also a career-best for the UCI sophomore.

Sophomore Mike Kennedy was ninth in the long jump with a mark of 22-11.

The second and final day of the meet is Sunday, with track and field events beginning at 12:00 p.m.
