IRVINE, Calif. --- UCI jumped out quickly, but struggled in singles falling 5-2 to No. 58 Cal Poly Saturday at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
UC Irvine (6-16, 3-2) made an early statement with a big doubles win. Fabian Matthews and Shuhei Shibahara continued their perfect run with an 8-2 win, and Jon Kazarian and Ryan Cheung clinched the early point with an 8-1 win.
Cal Poly would take five of the six singles sets early on with Sam Gould managing the only win for the 'Eaters. Jacob Jung battled back and forth on court three, but lost out on the tiebreaker.
Cal Poly racked up some singles points before Gould finished a straight-set win to bring it back to 3-2. Jung would fall in the clinching set to Cal Poly, and Kazarian fought all the way back to take a 5-4 lead in set two before giving up the set and the final point.
The win for Cal Poly puts them at 4-0 in the Big West with one match remaining at UC Riverside. The Mustangs locked up the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Big West tournament.
UC Irvine finishes third and will square off with UCR in the first round of the Big West tournament starting Fri. Apr. 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indio, Calif. A win for UCI will pit them against UCSB in the semifinals.
