Irvine, Calif. -- UC Irvine baseball player Andrew Thurman has been named this week's ESPN Zone Anaheim Anteater of the Week.
The sophomore pitcher from Orange has topped the headlines after pitching a near no-hitter in the Anteater's 4-1 win over No. 12 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. The right-hander was named Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week for going through the first eight innings without a hit, a near perfect performance; He gave up one hit and a walk in the ninth. Thurman clinched his third win of the season and struck out six in the game. His killer performance also led him to be named a College Baseball 360 Primetime Performer. This award takes into account an athletes contribution not only in statistics, but in other qualities including leadership skills and team success to name a few.
The Anteaters will take on San Diego State tonight in the Anteater Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. They will face-off against Long Beach State this weekend (Apr. 20-22) in the Black and Blue Rivalry Series at Blair Field.
