Streaking 'Eaters Get Big Boost from Cheung

STOCKTON, Calif. --- A late singles surge by the Anteaters put them over the top and 2-1 in the Big West for the 4-3 win over the Pacific Tigers Saturday at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.

UCI (5-15, 2-1) dropped the doubles point early to the Tigers. No. 2 pair Ryan Cheung (Irvine / University HS) and Fabian Matthews (Newport Beach / Corona del Mar HS) on, 8-4, to stave off the sweep.

Matthews brought his win into singles as well as the No. 85 player in the nation swept at the No. 1 slot to tie the match up.

Sam Gould (Hamilton, New Zealand / St. Kentigren College Prep) was finally defeated Saturday in a third-set tiebreaker. Freshmen Jacob Jung (Upland / Options for Youth HS) and Shuhei Shibahara (Rancho Palos Verdes / Peninsula HS) picked up the slack with big time wins, especially Jung who came back after losing the first set.

Cheung was the big winner of the day with the clinching point for his first singles win of the year in his 17th match.

The 'Eaters now go to 2-1 in the Big West this year and have won three in a row now as they finish up their road swing up north at UC Davis, Sun. Apr. 15th at 12:00 p.m.
