COTO DE CAZA, Calif. --- The Anteaters (2-14, 0-1) missed out on the crucial doubles point as they fell, 4-3, to the Princeton Tigers Saturday afternoon at Coto de Caza Country Club.
After the No. 2 and 3 doubles pairs split their matches with 8-6 scores, it was up to Ryan Cheung (Irvine / University HS) and Fabian Matthews (Newport Beach / Corona del Mar HS) in the No. 1 slot. They were just tripped up in the tiebreaker giving Princeton the early doubles point.
In singles, Sam Gould (Hamilton, New Zealand / St. Kentrigren College Prep) continued his hot streak with a 6-0, 6-0 win for UCI's tying point. Matthews and Jacob Jung (Upland / Options for Youth HS) would follow suit, however, the Tigers got big wins from No. 4 and 5 as the match went down to the wire tied at 3-3.
Shuhei Shibahara (Rancho Palos Verdes / Peninsula HS) came back with a huge second set win to send his match to set three. Ravi Yegya-Raman was able to hold off the surging freshman for the set and the match to give Princeton the clinching point.
UCI's next match is back at Anteater Tennis Stadium Sat. Apr. 1st at 1:00 p.m. as the Denver Pioneers visit.
