BOGOTA, Colombia --- UC Irvine alumnus Mike Lavery shot a 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Nationwide Tour's Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship presented by Samsung in Bogota, Colombia.

Lavery carded five birdies during his round at the Country Club de Bogota and is just two shots out of the lead.  Peter Lonard, Brian Smock and Bill Horschel are tied for first after each shot 66.

John Chin, another Anteater alum, shot 5-over 76 in Thursday's round.  The 72-hole tournament continues through Sunday.

Lavery, who played at UCI from 1999-2003, won the 2003 Big West individual title and was a three-time All-Big West honoree.

Chin was a 2010 Golfweek and PING All-America First Team (first in UCI's NCAA Division I history) and he was named to the 2010 All-Nicklaus team.

He was a three-time Big West Conference Golfer of the Year and two-time medalist at the Big West Conference Championship, including 2010 when he won the 54-hole tournament by nine shots.
