Irvine, Calif. – The Nevada women's basketball team dominated the rebounds and beat UC Irvine, 72-49 in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center Saturday.
Nevada (2-1) out-rebounded UC Irvine, 58-35, which included 19 offensive boards that resulted in 23 second chance points.
UC Irvine (0-3) struggled offensively to start the game and watched Nevada hold a 16-8 advantage in rebounds as the Wolf Pack jumped out to a 16-7 lead at 11:44. The Anteaters closed to six (19-16) on a Cheyenne Cathey layup at 10:03, but Nevada would outscore UCI, 12-4 to open the gap to 31-17 with 5:28 remaining in the first half.
After leading 40-26 at halftime, Nevada shot 50 percent (13-26) from the floor to UCI's 20 percent (6-30) to go to the 23 point victory.
Forwards Camille Buckely and Mokun Fajemisin led UCI with eight points each. Buckley also had a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Methlyn Onogomuho and senior Cheyenne Cathey had seven points apiece with Onogomuho swiping four steals.
For the game, the Anteaters were 18-67 (26.9%) from the field and 3-14 from three-point distance (21.4%). Nevada was 28-62 (45.2%) from the floor, hitting four from long range. The Wolf Pack committed 20 turnovers, while UCI had 12.
Nevada (2-1) was paced by Chanelle Brennan with 16 points and nine rebounds. Aja Johnson (12) and Danika Sharpe (11) followed in scoring. Nyasha Lesure added nine points and eight rebounds, while Arelle Wideman also added eight rebounds in the win.
The Anteaters will host Denver Wednesday (Nov. 21) at 7:00 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.
