BURLINGTON, Iowa --- Redshirt freshman Pete Fernandez led UC Irvine on the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
Fernandez shot a 2-under par 70 in the opening round Sunday and is in a nine-way tie for eighth place.
Stephan Jaeger of Chattanooga is the individual leader at 5-under 67.
UCI sophomore Allan Jun and junior Mickey Chan are tied for 29th place after opening rounds of 73. Sophomore Zack Duan is in 72nd place after shooting an 82 while redshirt sophomore Ryan Knapp withdrew from the first round.
Fernandez had six birdies in Sunday's round to rank second in the field and Jun carded five birdies.
UCI is in 13th place following a first-round 298. Chattanooga leads the tournament after opening with a score of 279, Arkansas is second at 280, and Iowa and Oklahoma State are tied for third at 283.
The second round is scheduled for Monday with the final round on Tuesday.
