STOCKTON, Calif. --- Jacob Mourer scored the game-winning goal with 1:02 remaining to lift No. 6 UC Irvine past ninth-ranked Long Beach State, 8-7, at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton Saturday morning.
With the victory, the 'Eaters (8-0) advance to face top-ranked USC at 2:40 p.m. today.
Mourer's goal completed UCI's comeback from a 6-3 halftime deficit.
The 'Eaters trailed 7-4 in the third quarter before Mourer (2:22) and Nick Pfeil (:05) scored to cut the margin to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.
Max Parrague tied the game at 7-7 on a goal with 4:15 left in the fourth, setting up Mourer's game-winner.
Redshirt junior goalie Jimmy Friedrich, who had 10 saves in the game, recorded five in the last period as UCI shut out the 49ers (7-1) in the final frame.
Mourer, Pfeil and Parrague scored two goals each while Trent Baxter and Mitch Wise added one apiece.
Brian Schiefer led Long Beach State with three goals.
