IRVINE, Calif. --- Junior Winston Newland had a hat trick, but sixth-ranked UC Irvine fell to No. 4 Stanford, 14-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Pool Sunday afternoon.
Newland scored the first two goals of the game to give UCI (14-10, 2-5 MPSF) an early lead, but a pair of goals by Forrest Watkins pulled the Cardinal (16-4, 5-2) even at 2-2 to close out the first quarter.
In the second period, Jacob Smith scored the first of his three goals at the 7:21 mark to give Stanford a 3-2 lead, but Newland countered with a goal at 6:49 to tie the game at 3-3.
Consecutive goals from Stanford's Paul Rudolph (5:05), Ryan Kent (4:14) and Alex Bowen (1:46) put the Cardinal up 6-3 before Brian Pickford's goal with 52 seconds left pulled the 'Eaters within 6-4. Rudolph scored his second goal of the period with 35 seconds remaining to give Stanford a 7-4 lead at halftime.
UCI's Trent Baxter opened the second-half scoring on a goal with 6:02 left in the third quarter to close the margin to 7-5, but the Cardinal then scored three straight goals to lead 10-5 at the end of the period and added the first two goals of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 12-5.
Jimmy Friedrich and Alex Kazmier split halves in goal for the 'Eaters, with each recording six saves. Brian Pingree had 11 stops for Stanford.
UCI plays its home finale Wednesday night at 7:00 with a non-conference game against UC San Diego. Seniors Trent Baxter, Sam Figueroa, Derrik Jarvis and Max Parrague will be recognized prior to the contest.
