LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Junior Winston Newland's third-quarter goal stood up as the game-winner as seventh-seeded UC Irvine downed No. 6 Pepperdine, 5-4, in a consolation game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center Saturday.

With the victory, UCI (16-12) will face eighth-seeded Pacific Sunday at 11:30 a.m. for fifth place.

In Saturday's game versus the Waves, Newland scored with 2:45 left in the third quarter to break a 4-4 tie and neither team scored again as the 'Eaters won two of three meetings with Pepperdine this season.

Senior Trent Baxter was the only UCI player with multiple goals as he netted two in Saturday's win.  Redshirt junior Jimmy Friedrich recorded 12 saves in goal, three in each period.

Pepperdine got on the board first as Danny White scored an extra-man goal with 5:16 left in the first quarter.

UCI's Mitch Wise answered with a power-play goal of his own at the 1:49 mark as the teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period.

Baxter scored his first goal on a power play with 6:07 remaining in the second quarter before Pepperdine's Matthew Detrane answered in an extra-man situation with 5:34 left.  Junior Nick Pfeil then gave UCI a 3-2 halftime lead as he notched a power-play goal with 55 seconds left in the first half.

Detrane's second extra-man goal tied the game at 3-3 with 7:07 left in the third quarter before Baxter put the 'Eaters back up 4-3 on a power-play score with 3:47 remaining in the period.

Nick Cooper's goal 30 seconds later drew Pepperdine even at 4-4 before Newland's natural goal closed out the scoring with 2:45 left in the quarter.

Pepperdine had a shot in the final 20 seconds of the game sail wide left of the cage and UCI gained possession to hold on for the win.

UCI has split games with Pacific this season, losing to the Tigers, 10-7, at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton Sept. 18 and winning 10-9 in an MPSF game, also in Stockton, Oct. 29.
