LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Three UC Irvine players scored two goals each but the seventh-seeded Anteaters fell to No. 2 California, 15-9, in a quarterfinal game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at UCLA's Spieker Aquatics Center Friday.
With the loss, UCI (15-12) will face the loser of UCLA-Pepperdine in a consolation semifinal Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Brian Pickford, Max Parrague and Jacob Mourer scored two goals apiece in Friday's loss to Cal (21-3).
Pickford gave the 'Eaters an early 1-0 lead on a power-play goal at 6:58 of the opening quarter, but the Bears went on to score five of the next six goals to lead 5-2 after the first period.
Parrague and Trent Baxter notched second-quarter goals and UCI trailed just 6-4 at intermission.
Ivan Rackov, who had five goals in the game for Cal, scored back-to-back goals to begin the third quarter, putting the Bears up 8-4.
Alan Robertson (5:21) and Parrague (4:44) scored extra-man goals to pull the 'Eaters within 8-6 before Cal eventually built an 11-7 lead after three periods.
Rackov scored a pair of goals again in the fourth and the Bears pulled away for the 15-9 victory.
Jimmy Friedrich had five saves in goal for UCI while Justin Parsons had seven for Cal.
